What is an Eco-Community, and Why is it Important?

Eco-communities are groups that adopt a sustainable way of life, focused on environmentally friendly practices that minimize waste and protect the planet. In these communities, members strive to live in harmony with nature through practices such as organic farming, local sourcing, energy conservation, and waste reduction. This lifestyle not only helps to preserve the environment but also fosters solidarity, collective awareness, and a healthier way of life. Eco-communities serve as inspiring models for a sustainable future.

Now, let’s hear from our volunteer about what it’s like to live in an eco-community:

What is it Like to Volunteer in an Eco-Community?

Each day, I work alongside more than 20 people—residents, younger and older volunteers, travelers, and weekend visitors. It's a place full of life, with so much to do, to experience, and so many inspiring people to talk to. Finding time for myself can sometimes be a challenge, but I treasure the rich interactions and the constant learning that comes with living here.

Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. We eat only organic, local, and vegan food; we wash dishes with coffee grounds instead of detergent; we make our own organic cleaning products; and we try our best to produce zero waste. These practices have become second nature to me, and I often wonder why such simple but impactful steps aren’t more common in society.

So, what does a typical day look like here? Every day is different! Mornings often start with helping prepare meals, cleaning, or doing garden work. There are also larger projects like building a strawbale house; lately, I've been learning how to create clay plasters and decorations. I even get time for my creative projects—recently, I designed a sign system for our community bikes.

The rest of the day, I enjoy reading, studying, biking around the beautiful surroundings, or swimming in the lush, green river nearby. Living in this community is about connecting deeply with nature and with myself, all while continuously learning and creating.
