My One Year in Slovakia: A Journey of Growth in Čadca

Looking back at this past year, spending 12 months in Slovakia—specifically in Čadca—has been one of the most rewarding, emotional, and transformative experiences of my life. Here is a summary of how this incredible adventure unfolded.

Why I chose this project and location

When I decided to embark on a long-term project, I knew I wanted to step out of my comfort zone and live somewhere authentic, surrounded by nature. Slovakia might not be the most typical destination people think of first, and that is precisely what drew me to it: its hidden beauty and genuine charm.

I chose Čadca, a town in the Kysuce region near the northern border, because it offered the perfect balance for me. Nestled amidst rolling hills, lush forests, and mountains, it felt like the ideal setting to disconnect from the noise of big cities, immerse myself in a tight-knit community, and experience life at a different pace.

What I was actually doing on the project and with whom

Throughout the year, I was involved in local volunteering and community development initiatives. A major part of my daily life was working in local schools and teaching Spanish, alongside organizing youth activities, cultural workshops, and community events.

I was not doing this alone—I was fortunate to work alongside an amazing international team of volunteers from different parts of Europe, as well as inspiring local Slovak mentors and staff. Stepping into the classrooms, interacting with the students, and sharing my language and culture turned out to be one of the most fulfilling parts of the entire experience.

What surprised me, taught me, and helped me grow

Before coming here, I never imagined how happy I would be working in education. Discovering this passion for teaching was an unexpected gift. Being in the schools taught me one of the most valuable lessons of all: nothing has to be perfect, because what truly matters is the process and the learning along the way. At first, I tried to make every lesson flawless, but I soon realized that the real magic happened in the laughter, the genuine connections with students, and the small daily progress. It showed me that anything is possible if you put your heart into it.

I was also deeply touched by the mindset and incredible hospitality of the people. I felt genuinely valued and appreciated for who I was and what I contributed—it made me feel truly welcome from day one. (And on a fun side note, people here are surprisingly good-looking.)

How it helped me grow:

• Embracing Imperfection: Learning that unexpected moments are part of the journey took away the pressure and allowed me to truly enjoy every single class.
• Finding a New Passion: Discovering how much I love teaching gave me a newfound confidence and clarity about my future.
• Believing in Myself: Overcoming language barriers, managing classrooms, and adapting to a new country proved to me that I can handle any challenge.

The organization and the people around me

The host organization made a world of difference. From day one, they ensured we felt supported, helped us integrate into the town, and gave us the freedom to propose our own ideas and creative projects.

As for Čadca and its surrounding region, it has a unique soul. The Kysuce nature provided the perfect backdrop for personal reflection. The locals take great pride in their traditions, and being welcomed into their daily routine was a privilege.

A Bitter-Sweet Ending

As this chapter comes to an end, it is truly heartbreaking to say goodbye. Leaving this place, the school, the students, and the people who made me feel so appreciated isn't easy. But I leave with a full heart, a strong belief that everything is possible, and the sincere hope of crossing paths with everyone again someday.

In summary: My year in Čadca brought me lifelong friendships, a newfound passion for teaching, invaluable life lessons about valuing the process over perfection, and a deep, lasting love for Slovakia.

I joined this volunteering project because I’m excited to learn everything! I’m a fun, curious person, always open to new experiences.

I love doing crafts, spending time with animals, and learning about other cultures. My main motivation for joining this project is to grow both personally and professionally, and to connect with people from all over the world.

I’m really happy to be part of this adventure in Čadca.
